Next flight out freight: what it is, when to use it, and how to choose a broker
Next flight out freight - KLAM Expeditors NFO shipping broker

Your production line has stopped. A machine is down and the part you need is sitting in a warehouse three states away. Standard overnight delivery is not fast enough. Your operations manager is asking for options. This is exactly the situation that next flight out freight was designed for.

NFO is not a commonly understood service outside of supply chain and logistics circles, but for businesses that depend on time-critical freight - manufacturers, distributors, aerospace companies, medical device manufacturers, and anyone running a just-in-time operation - it is one of the most valuable tools available. Here is a straightforward explanation of what it is, when it makes sense, and what to look for when choosing a broker.

What is next flight out freight?

Next flight out (NFO) is exactly what it sounds like. Your shipment is booked onto the next available commercial flight departing from the nearest airport to the origin, regardless of airline or route. The freight moves as cargo on that flight, is collected at the destination airport by a waiting courier, and delivered directly to the consignee - often within hours of the original pickup.

The service is differentiated from standard air freight in one critical way: speed over cost. Standard air freight is scheduled and price-optimised. NFO is reactive and time-optimised. You are paying a premium for guaranteed same-day air movement with no waiting for the next scheduled service.

"Next flight out freight is the emergency room of logistics. You do not use it every day, but when you need it, nothing else will do. The cost of the shipment is almost always smaller than the cost of the downtime it prevents."

How does NFO freight work in practice?

The process moves quickly, which is the whole point. Here is the typical sequence:

  • Contact your broker: You call or message your NFO broker with the shipment details - origin, destination, dimensions, weight, and any handling requirements.
  • Broker identifies the next flight: Your broker checks available flights from the nearest airport to the origin and books cargo space on the earliest departure. This can happen within minutes of your call.
  • Pickup dispatched: A courier is dispatched to collect the shipment and deliver it to the airport cargo facility in time for check-in on that flight.
  • Airside handling: The freight is checked in as air cargo and travels in the hold of the commercial flight. No separate charter required.
  • Destination pickup: A courier at the destination airport collects the shipment immediately on arrival and delivers direct to your facility.
  • Delivery confirmation: You receive proof of delivery with timestamp and chain-of-custody documentation.

Total transit time from call to delivery can be as short as three to six hours for same-city corridors with good flight connectivity, and typically under 24 hours for most US domestic routes.

When does NFO freight make sense?

NFO is not the right choice for every shipment. The cost premium is real, and for shipments where time is not the overriding factor, standard express services are more cost-effective. NFO makes sense in the following situations:

  • Production line down: When a machine failure halts manufacturing and a critical replacement part is needed within hours, not days. The cost of production downtime typically exceeds the NFO premium many times over.
  • Medical and pharmaceutical emergencies: Surgical instruments, replacement medical devices, or pharmaceutical supplies needed for scheduled procedures.
  • Aerospace and defence: Aircraft on ground (AOG) situations where a grounded aircraft needs parts to return to service. Every hour on the ground has a measurable cost.
  • Semiconductor and electronics: High-value components for production runs with tight delivery windows.
  • Trade shows and events: When exhibit materials miss a scheduled shipment and need to arrive before a show opens.
  • Legal and financial documents: When physical document delivery is legally required by a specific deadline.

What does NFO freight cost?

NFO pricing is dynamic and depends on several factors: origin and destination airports, available flight options, shipment weight and dimensions, time of day, and any special handling requirements. There is no published rate card for NFO - every shipment is quoted individually based on current conditions.

As a rough orientation, NFO typically costs three to ten times the equivalent standard overnight rate, depending on the route and timing. For a ten-pound shipment from Chicago to Los Angeles, you might expect to pay $200 to $600 for NFO versus $40 to $80 for standard overnight. For heavier shipments or less connected routes, the premium can be higher.

The right way to think about the cost is not what you are paying per pound, but what you are avoiding. A production line running at $50,000 per hour makes a $400 NFO shipment look like a very good investment.

What to look for in an NFO freight broker

Not every freight broker can execute NFO effectively. The service requires airline relationships, airport contacts, a network of couriers positioned near major airports, and a dispatcher who can move quickly at any hour. Here is what to evaluate:

  • 24/7 availability: Emergencies do not happen during business hours. Your NFO broker needs a live human dispatcher reachable around the clock, every day. An answering service or voicemail is not sufficient.
  • Licensing: Your broker should be a licensed freight broker with an active MC number issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. KLAM Expeditors operates under MC# 1664023. Verify any broker you work with at the FMCSA website before placing a shipment.
  • Airport courier network: The broker needs established courier relationships at both origin and destination airports. A broker who has to cold-call for pickup capacity is not equipped for true NFO service.
  • Experience with your cargo type: Aerospace parts, medical devices, and semiconductor components all have handling requirements. Confirm your broker has experience with your specific cargo category.
  • Chain of custody documentation: For most NFO shipments, you need verifiable proof of pickup, flight details, and delivery confirmation with timestamp. Confirm this is provided as standard.
  • Clear communication: During an NFO shipment, you need real-time updates - not a tracking number on a website. Your broker should be proactively communicating flight status, pickup confirmation, and delivery ETA.
NFO versus other expedited freight options

It is worth briefly distinguishing NFO from other expedited services, since the terminology is sometimes used loosely:

  • NFO (next flight out): Commercial passenger flight, next departure, door-to-door with airport couriers. Fastest option for most domestic routes. No minimum volume required.
  • Charter air freight: Dedicated aircraft for your shipment alone. Used when cargo is too large for commercial hold, when the cargo requires special handling a commercial carrier cannot accommodate, or when no suitable commercial flight exists.
  • High priority air freight (HPAF): Similar to NFO but may involve booking priority cargo space on scheduled air freight services rather than passenger aircraft. Sometimes faster for heavier shipments where commercial hold capacity is a constraint.
  • Expedited ground: When air is not required and same-day or next-day ground delivery is sufficient. Faster and cheaper than NFO for shorter distances where flight time is not a meaningful advantage.
